Resolutions THEY should Make!

I resolve….

k4ze, Tennessee Trish, – to accept my OWN voice and diction, and be proud of it!
kd7bcw, Big Ben, – to find somewhere else to put my heart other than my sleeve!
kd7kau, Carey, – to stop saying that I’ll be back, cause I won’t.
kg6thx, SteveO, – to stay ON that wagon! That’s all I’m gonna say about that.
ki6gu, Burbank Jim, – to buy & read Etiquette for Dummies by Sue Fox, just for fun!
kn6z, Glen, – to find something ELSE to take pics of!
ks7o, Sue, – to read: Antenna Theory & Design by Robert Elliott
n5mza , Timmie, – to find something to do AWAY from the radio!
n6ayj, Billie the Vile, – to stop defecating in my own back yard.
n7js, Utah Jim, – to learn to rock the boat when I think it’s needed.
w6ezv, Greg the goon, – go to anger management classes and never threaten anyone again!
w6mku, Joanne – to remain always haughty.!
w6obb , artie, – to stop being so bossy, or un-retire, or both!
w7mag, Paul, – to put in writing what’s acceptable or not on HamCams.
w7lw, Melba Mac, – to send a few of those extra cow pies to some 3840 extra HAMS.
wq6i, Moody, – to intervene with sanity and a soothing voice instead of slinking away.

Time Out!

The testosterone levels are way out of control! At this point, there are just far too many males, far too angry. So, everyone to a corner! Not to prepare for another ‘round’ of the same, but to prepare for producing some ‘peace & order’ from chaos!

I’m serious! Get yourself a chair and take it to a corner. Sit there for at least 10 minutes! No external stimuli; no radio, magazine, TV, music, drink, or talk with another person. Just sit there on that chair and stare at the wall for at least 10 minutes. Clear your mind.

When the 10 minutes are over; put into practice whatever techniques YOU use for stress control, deep breathing, exercise, meditation, prayer, cursing, or beating your thick head against the wall.

After you’re stress is reduced, your mind clear, take the vow!

Today, I will not say anything that isn’t ‘nice’.

If it’s not nice, I won’t say it (I’m sure your Mother taught you this, you’ve just forgotten how to put it into practice!); no matter how upset, angry, goaded, or provoked I am. If someone calls me a ****, or whatever, I’ll respond with, ‘your audio is good tonight’, or whatever! I will NOT say anything to anyone on air, that isn’t nice.

If you let yourself be provoked, immediately revert to the ‘nice’ mode. In fact, try to put some kind of visual reminder of your VOW on or near your radio. Have you gentlemen (ahem), never heard the phrase, ‘kill them with kindness?” It works! (ANY mother will tell you so.)

And the jammers; positively, absolutely totally, ignore them! Eventually they will go somewhere where they’ll have some success pushing people’s buttons.

Now I can hear the ‘comments’ already: “‘evvy, why don’t you practice what you preach.” Well, the fact is, I am NOT A HAM, I am not on air! I give my opinion, and folks get mad, no doubt, but usually one at a time. I don’t disrupt an entire frequency night after night! Filth and threats of violence do NOT spill from my mind to my mouth! I do not endanger long term friendships (often, I cement them-you against me!). I don’t have a hobby or license at stake. You do.

If just 2 – 3 HAMS would do this tonight, be dedicated and persistent about it, not allow themselves to be dragged down to the lowest level NO MATTER WHAT, not allow themselves to be driven off frequency, and another couple pick it up tomorrow night, and another couple the night after, we’ll soon be back to signal reports, audio reports, loops (heaven help us all!), and Tim’s Travels…

This works (again, ask any mom)! Just do it, even if at times you don’t feel ‘like’ being nice to some ‘jerk’! And keep on doing it! Tell other HAMS what you are doing, your 'plan of action', maybe they will start doing it too.

Chose to ‘act’ not ‘react’, (nothing 'unmanly' about that!), take back your frequency and your self-control.

Twas the Night

Happy Holidays to all (& that means EVERYONE!) from the staff of HamFans…

Twas the Night before Christmas
Variation by Jim Southwick, N7JS, 12.2005
Published with permission of Jim Southwick N7JS

Twas the night before Christmas
And all through the air
Was the sound of some fools
All jamming with care

They cued up the music
All snug in their group
While sitting there waiting
For the Cult of the Loop

They laughed and they giggled
And gave a high five
For their signal was strong
But their audio was nigh

On ego, on cliquish
On rich and on poor
My audio is great
But my life is a bore

I can't read a book
And I can't write a poem
I'll marry my radio
Just let me be known

So they fondled their Icoms
And caused such a sight
They fondled their cables
Hell, they fondled their mikes!

I'll buy the new toy
The whole damn caboodle
I'll eat nothing but
Some Top Ramen noodle

They spoke with aplomb
They spoke with delight
While feeling intelligent
All into the night

The listeners all clamored
All fraught with a glee
For they could get meaning
Vicariously, you see

They kissed off their fate
And drank till once soused
They pissed away future
Who needed a spouse?

The drama was strong
And the timing was right
The ass kissing heavy
Well into the night

One night your best friend
And one night just a pain
Then back in the group
No loss and no gain

The drama goes on
But the story the same
It keeps up the interest
It keeps up the game

So I fight to stay aside
And I fight with my might
And to all a Merry Christmas
And to all a good night!

Last Nights Show

Last Night’s Show

When thinking about Last Night’s Show, words do not fail me. The words that come immediately to mind: craziness, sadness, unbelievable, loss, emotional, schism, knives in the back, and friends and foes.

One thing that struck me the hardest; there was more than enough culpability to go around to all but a handful of hams.

If it weren’t for the fact that I know most of these folks through email or on air, I would have walked out of this one long before the end.

As it was, I stayed up doing my ‘duty’; I listened, and recorded. If anyone wants the complete, unedited, 6 mp3’s of this 3 hour group flagellation, email me. (I was going to post them to the HamFans site, but didn’t have enough MB’s – I’m thinking about buying more, just to post these.)

Are we having fun yet??? This is a Hobby???

It would have been a lot easier to go out on the busy intersection I live by, and watch a car wreck. I’m sure there would have been less blood and gore…

I made www.hamcams.com !!!

And the sub-title is 'wannabe ham'. Actually, this woman, whomever she is, looks a great deal better than some of the old coots who are part of the 3840 group.

But I am NO longer a 'wannabe' ham. I admit I used to be, but no longer. I LIKE being a SWL and commentator..

Far from insulting me, or making me angry, this parody made my day guys!

I may not be 'the happiest person on the planet, but I'm as close to it as anyone can get this side of Bill Gates! Any day I wake up breathing, I am happy! Any year I go through without still one more cancer surgery, I am thrilled. Here is a 'real' last year pic of me! So you wimpy suckers can laugh at me all you want. I can take as well as dish it out! BTDT!

This guy, on the other hand (notice lighter at hand!) is a wannabe WRITER!!!

And artie, I STILL know what your next book should be!

Vindication

Vindication

The ‘detectives’ of www.3840HamCams.com didn’t take long to find out that it was artie who slammed the site polls in August/Sept. of this year.  Proving once again how small and mean spirited artie is.

Last night, on air, Art Bell w6obb, not only admitted that he had been the ‘slammer’, but seemed proud of it.  Sounds like bragging to me!  If you missed it, you can hear it at:  http://www.3840hamfans.com/Audio/CurrentEvents/Index.html

The Politics of Ego

The Politics of Ego in the Cult of the Loop

Earlier today I dropped by http://www.hamcams.com/ to see if there might be some new pictures (yea, sure) posted.

Imagine my non-surprise to find that Jim Watkins ki6gu’s long standing slot had been dropped from the second row down to the last third of the page.

Of course, he’s never sat at the right or left hand of the Lord of the Loop; those spots are taken by Paul Bowman w7mag, and Big Ben Gardner kd7bcw (since Karen w6so’s voluntary withdrawal when there was MUCH jockeying for that coveted slot) respectively.

But for a very long time, Jim Watson’s ki6gu, spot has been featured prominently on the second row, right beside Burbank Gregg’s w6ezv, slot.

So, it would seem, according to the politics of artie’s ego, that Jim Watson ki6gu, has indeed lost favor with the power that is. But the good news is that Jim Watson ki6gu didn’t tick artie off so badly that his slot was dropped totally from the page, as was Steve Wingate’s kg6txh a few months ago.

This obvious type of political maneuvering with the slots on http://www.hamcams.com/ has been denied repeatedly. Artie and his minions say, “Oh, we just shuffle the slots randomly once in awhile.”

Isn’t it strange that when this ‘random shuffling’ occurs that only one or two slots of specific HAMS get rearranged? And usually only when artie is ticked at one of ‘his group’?

They can deny the politics of it all they want; ANY long time Cult of the Loop observer can tell you immediately who’s in favor and out, just by looking at the ‘position’ of the slots on http://www.hamcams.com/!

Jim Watson ki6gu’s position is currently quite far down the ladder…it would seem that the once dubbed, Bad Boy of Burbank, has been very very bad indeed!

Mature Adults? Right!

I was taught that it was immature when you were losing, or didn't like how the game was going, to grab your toys and go home, thereby ending the game. For everyone!

But that's exactly what Paul Bowman w7mag has done with his http://www.hamcams.com/ site. And what artie w60bb is doing with his tuner. Punish all for what a few have done that they didn't like. Paul w7mag, posted this message on the HamCams site:

ATTN PLEASE.......
HamCams is not a forum for people to
air out their laundry, dirty or otherwise.
HamCams is not going to allow bickering via
photos or clever phrases.
If you feel the need to do that,
might I suggest newsgroups where
they seem to like that sort of thing.
I don't care for it.
Since I pay for this site,
and maintain this site,
I'll allow and disallow whatever I see fit.
Call it censorship if you like.
I really don't care.
This site is supposed to be FUN.
Radio is supposed to be FUN.
*sigh*
I feel better now.
Thank you for your time.
Paul - W7MAG
We will return to our regularly scheduled program soon...

Actually, I don't call it censorship; I call it infantile. And one wonders whose idea this really was, to shut down the site & punish everyone, Paul of Pahrump or artie's who seems, at times, to pull Paul's strings?

So congrats to all you MATURE ADULTS for not only acting like children, but for publicly showing everyone just how childish you really are: no pics on HamCams and who know what on the 'famed' Pahrump receiver.

When a service is provided, even if it is a free service, it carries a certain amount of public obligation, no matter how angry, hurt, sick, etc. you may be. At least to reputable people...

New Logo & w6mku

Listen nightly (see below for online tuner links) as the HAMS feud, then make nice with each other. Catch up on their lives. spouses, ills, and new toys.

Drama decades in the making, featuring REAL characters, including Art Bell w6obb. Better than any afternoon soap; listen more than once and you'll be 'hooked'!

This site is to guide beginners and aficionados (&HAMS) alike into the world of Online Short Wave Listening starting with the 3.840 group. Wander through the many pages & features of this site, and enjoy!

So goes the new intro to the main page of the site. And that is just the 'shot over the bow'.

I have some power and speed in my computer now, and will be able to 'report' in the 3840GrudgeReport more often. Not to mention keeping the site updated!

Also, wanted to reassure all that I am not 'bitter' or 'sniping'. Nor do any of my activities 'cheapens your art, too' as Joanne w6mku, has said behind my back. (And what would she know about art?). At least when I say something, the person knows it, and they have many ways to contact me, including posting a reply to this blog...

So be sure to watch for those 3840GrudgeReport notices, and/or check the site out often!

Whats with the Online Tuners (or Art Bell as censor)?

Between uploads of data to a friend’s server, (I’m backing up data in preparation of changing computers.) I did listen for about an hour to the Pahrump receiver: http://www.smeter.net/pahrump/audio.php. Got right in, in fact! And the reason why was because it was a rerun!!!!

It took a few minutes for me to realize that I’d heard this before. It was a recording of a transmission that I had heard shortly after Katrina struck (of which they spoke). It sounded familiar, but it wasn’t until I heard Joanne w6mku come on to defend FEMA, that I realized I was listening to a ‘rerun’. I did check the s-meter page, and there were no notes there about a 'replay'. So any folks listening out there, thought they were hearing 'live' SW!

Then I went to Radio Bothell Online, my own fav online tuner, as Kent Nyberg wm70 REALLY operates a full featured online tuner at: http://home.comcast.net/~ka7znm/stream.html, (Though the audio could be better!) At Radio Bothell, on 3.840 there was just 'static'. I used the 'presets' and checked a few other frequencies, and never did hear a ‘voice’. I did not, however, have the mental acuity to check an AM station, to see if the tuner was working. I just assumed the tuner was down, or that no one was on air.

I quickly whipped by Jim Southwick n7js’s, recently back online tuner at: http://www.jimandleah.com/, and that tuner does not seem to be online any longer, other than streaming through s-meter. Unfortunately I don’t know if Jim was also streaming the ‘replay’. I didn’t think to check and actually, didn’t have the time as I needed to get back to uploading data.

I sure hope JimandLeah and Radio Bothell get any tech probs they may be having ironed out soon as there are many, many HAMS and SWL’s out there seeking that ‘voice in the night’.

And it would seem that artie w60bb is unable to provide that service for them without falling into the temptation of ‘manipulating’ these listeners by choosing, all by himself, what they should (and conversely, should NOT) hear!

Now I admit there is probably MUCH material heard at night that probably SHOULD NOT be replayed the next day. And I admit that it IS Art Bell's receiver. But Art Bell w60bb as ‘supreme’ censor of 3.840??? It seems to be turning out that way. Manipulation of the media, any media, especially without any type of 'notice', is the ultimate in control…

A Question Answered

For years now, various people have asked me why I haven't gotten my 'ticket'.

I've replied with the logical: not enough time, not enough money (it IS an expensive hobby), not enough energy. I'm NOT technically oriented.

Then too, I love being a SWL of 3.840. I love that voice in the night. I love being a 3.840 'commentator' (They may not admit it, but I enhance their 'group'). I love radio in all it's forms.

But after listening to 3.840 tonight and the conversations about:

1) cow farts
2) oil changes
3) signal strength
4) cholesterol meds
5) and some old coot asking Trish if her hubby 'let her' stay up all night to talk!
6) The Burrow Motel
7) eating at Denny's

It came to me in a flash! The real reason I don't get an amateur radio license became very clear; obviously I'm not stupid enough!

Radio Bothell Online

Provided by Kent Nyberg, wm7o, it’s back; and better than ever! Radio Bothell is a full-featured online tuner.

The tuner is password controlled, (you can get a password by contacting Kent - see the site for email addy). So there are none of the hijinks common to ‘open’ tuners.

This tuner is on a ‘first come’ basis. NO booting you out after a period of time. If you can get in, either to the tuner OR the stream, you can stay as long as you like.

A really neat thing about the Bothell Radio Online tuner is that there are ‘presets’; some great AM, FM, and SW frequencies (including 3.840) to listen to easily, just click with your mouse.

There is an on site chat, and simple info on how to use the tuner, which is NOT smeter associated.

And there’s an accompanying Yahoo List you can join where you can ask questions, etc.

As usual, there are a limited number of ‘tuner’ spots, but even if the Bothell Tuner is full, it IS streamed, both on the site, and on www.Hamstreams.com.

Add to all the above; good, clean, crisp audio, and you have a superior online Tuner.

Thanks and welcome back Kent!

Delilah!!! (Oh My! )

I was listening, almost intently, as the HAMS on 3.840 last night walked Trish k4ze, through exactly what she needed/wanted in a transceiver.

Glenn kn6z was particularly helpful, though I have no natural interest in the speed of light, etc, I was listening and learning from him (It's so nice to have a legit professor on air - but doesn't the guy have a pic more current than 1998 to put on QRZ?)

When Trish was finally able to articulate what, exactly, she wanted, there was a moment of utter silence. But the HAMS on air, accepted her answer with aplomb.

Trish wants a Transceiver that will make her SOUND LIKE Delilah!!!!

The on-air Hams treated her gently, and went off to Google Delilah (Click on link above to find what we all found.). Only Sue k7so, had what may have amounted to some sarcasm in her voice. Me? I was falling off my chair laughing! And, oh yea, I want a mirror that makes me LOOK like I'm a size 12...

Numbers, Numbers, Numbers!

As I just spot checked the last GRUDGE Report I posted for errors, I noticed that http://3840hamfans.blogspot.com/ hits have PASSED 10,000! In fact the count was 10117!

I mention this because these are REAL numbers, 10,117 folks have READ (and perhaps responded to) articles in The 3840GRUDGE Report!

REAL as meaning factual hits; NOT padded, as some other sites with suddenly high hit counters and/or unbelievable numbers (some of which would have probably had to get 10,000 hits per day, EVERY day, since they opened to get numbers like that!).

As always, The 3840GRUDGE Report, tells it like it is...

JimandLeahs up and running!!!

And it's a blast!

I just spent an hour wandering around it looking and trying out stuff. The 'opener' is slick, professional, and a 'hoot'.

The tuner is back, and thankfully, it's going to be passworded eventually (I already applied for mine, Jim!).

And the java chatroom is there, and though I didn't have anyone to 'chat' with, it seemed to work seamlessly.

SSTV (whatever that is) is back.

New, is a weather module that is interesting. But I didn't see any (doesn't mean it isn't there folks, just means I didn't notice it) atmospheric conditions, or space weather stuff (sunspots). I do like my weather stuff!

New, is HamStreams, where you can listen in to various streams from Hams that wish to sign up. So far there seem to be two 'slots' being used, and several waiting for takers. (I think I'm gonna love this feature!). I actually listened to one for a few minutes, don't know what I was listening to, but was great that I could DO IT...

Missing was a 3840HamFans banner. But that's because our new logos & banners haven't been unveiled yet (soon to come!).

Terrific job Jim!!!!

Jim&Leah's Online Tuner(s) Status

Jim n7js posted this to the 3840HamFans Blog in a 'comment' section. I wanted to make sure everyone saw it, so am reposting it (ad hoc) with it's own title, and sending out notice, as usual... evvy

I'm posting this here, because whether others admit it or not, this place is probably read more than any other info site by all sides. My new site will be password controlled. You just need to request one. The site will all be in active/x so it will have the updated capabilities, (i.e. signal graphing, users online viewing, chat, etc) There will also be the auto SSTV uploader. In addition there will be real time uploaded weather data and an Echolink Repeater back online. That's for starters for now. Please use Art's receiver for 3.840 as is being done. It's a real waste of resources to use mine for one freq. Someone told me, it's not a waste because it's late at night and no-one would use it for anything else at that time. Actually, I used to have a broad spectrum of European users etc. who used it at those hours but became frustrated with the constant pull back to 3.840 all the time. HOWEVER, I have furthermore created a page called hamstreams.com just in case you can't get into Art's etc. (or he pulls it down or whatever). Hamstreams will be a consolodation page for anyone interested in streaming 3.840. All the streams don't have to be exclusive of that, but it would be nice if some were for backup. You will need a static IP (one that does not change to do this) and high speed internet. If you have Comcast, you are good to go for sure. Other's may also have a static IP.If you are interested in your own spot - let me know, so I know how many to roll out at first. (soujim@wfrmls.com) I need your AUDIO streaming URL (i.e 24.59.476.459:8080). Also a URL to a picture of your setup (i.e. http://crazyman.tripod.com/station.jpg).73 Jim N7JS

The Proof is in the Pudding (Results)

Apparently, night before last, 9.8.05, there was a long, deep, animated, and sometimes heated discussion on 3.840 regarding the recent disaster of hurricane Katrina. It would seem that all the ‘regulars’ had an opinion (of course, don’t we all!).

The only problem with this was that there were NO ARCHIVED RECORDINGS of this, no doubt, collectable event. Even artie w60bb does not have any recordings! He said that: in order for the recordings that are made (by s-meter) and replayed the next day to be saved, artie himself has to notify s-meter BEFORE 8pm. That is BEFORE anyone knows if there’s going to be a ‘need’ for such a record to be archived! (Guess the highly touted s-meter does have its flaws.)

And, let's face it, even if artie HAD recordings, he'd only share them with 'the loop cult' and then only after he'd edited them!

Last night, there was much on air moaning and groaning by various HAMS who’d missed the most recent fun and games. They wanted to listen to recordings of the conversation. It was pointed out (as if we all didn’t already know this) by artie, that anyone could have listened to the replays during the day today had they wanted.

But this again assumes, that a person WOULD KNOW that they wanted to hear something, and would be home and not sleeping, working, or whatever ‘ing’ they might be involved in at the exact time of the replay. They’d also have to be AT their computer, and manage to get back on the tuner (missing how much of the replay?) every hour as they were bounced off.

I know I’d sure like to hear that conversation! Last night on air it was reported that: Jim Watson ki6gu, insulted Trish. That Trish k4ze, went away ‘mad’ (Trish, was it worth all you’ve gone through?). That Moody wq6i, thought the whole event ‘magnified’ (My word, not his – but since I don’t have a recording, I have to go on memory, which is admittedly poor.). This is ALL second and third hand info, as I didn’t hear it myself and again, have no recordings.

Since I am obviously not a HAM, therefore not a member of the 'cult of the loop', I do not have access to the few hour-long segments, that some HAMS did record. If you have one of these segments, please email to me at HamFans@cox.net !

Lastly, this is all totally nuts!!!
-Stop that 1 hr kick off on the Pahrump Tuner, at least till some other ‘streaming’ tuners are online.
-Why can’t artie put up a second, non s-meter, ‘streaming’ tuner?
-Why can’t s-meter ASSIGN 10 slots just for designated streamers, that wouldn’t be ‘kicked’???
-Offer to help Jim n7js, with his HamStreams project (Jim, can I be of help?)
-If you are in a position to stream, get it up and going!
-If 3840HamFans can help in any way with these projects, please let me know.

The God Experiment

From the above ‘statement’ on http://www.hamcams.com/ today, it would seem artie w6obb’s grand experiment didn’t quite work out as he’d planned.

Instead of the masses worshiping at artie’s feet in thankful gratitude for the great and wonderful thing he’d provided for them, The Pahrump Receiver, only the loyal loop worshipers responded appropriately.

Worse yet, somewhere along the way, artie lost control of the Pahrump Receiver; folks were not following HIS directions on how, and when to use HIS Receiver! Once he realized this, he took several impotent steps towards ‘correction’ of these problems.

-The first thing he did was to institute a one hour listening limit, instead of leaving it on a ‘first come, first serve basis.

-Then he proceeded to ‘edit’ what was replayed the next day.

-Lastly, he would leave the tuner on 3.840 while he and some of his cronies went to another frequency.

-Now he’s threatening to close down the Pahrump Receiver if those nasty little ‘jammers’ don’t stop playing with HIS toy. The old, I’m gonna take my toys and go home, game little children play.

Good riddance I say.

Perhaps Jim Southwick n7js will put a tuner back on his page. Even with all the ‘jerks’ that we had to deal with there (and there were a lot of ‘em, being the tuner was not ‘passworded’), it was still far better, fairer, than what artie’s done.

Or maybe Kent Nyberg wm70 will get another tuner up and running soon. You don’t have to kiss anyone’s’ ass to listen on those tuners! These two guys truly provided a ‘service’ in the full sense of the word…

THIS is a Hobby?

In the past 7 – 10 days, one person has repeatedly slammed a monthly poll on www.3840HamFans . It’s a vicious, petty, vindictive action, and I wanted to know who was doing it. What kind of person feels it necessary to spoil EVERYONE’S fun? Over days, I set a trap, and got my answer.

I have narrowed it down to a user of the ISP air-connect, in Pahrump, NV, which pretty much means it’s artie w6obb, or his flunky, air-connect owner/operator, Paul Bowman w7mag. (Feel free to contact them about this.) I doubt that some other Pahrump air-connect user (if there are any) would have any vested interest in doing this, and since the poll was about artie’s ‘baby’ the Pahrump Receiver, well...

That’s not the half of it! Over this same time period, as I was investigating the problem:
-One HAM, told me to ‘Keep my f-ing mouth shut.’
-One HAM, said “So What?” (The ‘what’ is that I put a lot of time, energy, & money into the site! And, a lot of folks enjoy it!)
-One HAM, supposedly a friend, has refused to reply to me on IM.
-A cowardly anon poster on this blog, posted ‘why don’t you just go away.’
-A cowardly anon poster on this blog, suggested I commit suicide.

Now, are these the SAME people trying to ATTRACT new folks to the hobby? If Amateur Radio is on its way out, and I think it is, as these old coots die off, WHO would want to be around people like this? Amateur Radio, or any organized hobby, is MORE than the hobby, it is the people, (and how they act in their personal lives).

I think the majority of people that hang on 3.840 FOR artie, are pathological sickies. And as an anon poster to this blog mentioned earlier, I agree that the FCC should move in and come down HARD, on all these HAMS for ALL infractions!

If these same HAMS were really interested in ‘expanding’ the hobby, you’d think they’d:
1) Clean up their acts. (“Pretty is, as pretty does!”)
2) Support www.3840HamFans and the other swl online sites.
3) Support and help set up online streaming.

In the meantime, I am NOT going away. No, indeedy, I’m gonna tighten-it-up…

The Phone Patch

After a hundred thousand tries, I finally managed to get into the so-called Pahrump Receiver last night for an entire hour.

I heard the 'testing' of the phone patch, including arties w6obb, phone call to Jim Watson ki6gu. Then whatever came after that, till my 'nickel' was up, and I was kicked out. Oh, and I even missed a few minutes of that as I had to visit 'the other room', something that couldn't be put off.

After another hundred thousand tries at refreshing the Pahrump Receiver page, I gave up in total frustration, and went to bed with a good book and Coast To Coast AM with George Noory, (whom I might add, is NEVER on an ego trip!). It was a lot more fun and relaxing.

What I did hear of the ‘Phone Patch’ was fascinating. Sorry I missed it the event in it’s entirety. And miss it all I did. Even today, at odd times, I tried to get into the Pahrump Receiver, in the hopes of catching at least part of the ‘playback’ with no more luck than I’d had last night.

However, my brain matter was not inactive as I was clicking away at the refresh button; here’s the direction my thoughts took…

-Does artie REALLY think he’s going to make friends and influence people to get involved in Amateur Radio with what has turned out to be just another version of the old ‘bait & switch’ bit??? (Put up a receiver, promote it heavily, then not let anyone listen to it?)

-Does he really think that folks are going to stick around a hobby very long, when all they get is frustrated and feel that their strings are being pulled as if they are puppets?

-WHY does a ‘hobby’ need to be promoted anyway? WHO said this needed to be done? Amateur Radio will die a natural death or it won’t, there’s nothing artie or any other HAM, can do about it. You are interested in a specific activity, or you are not; you seek it out, or you don’t. In all my life, I have NEVER seen anyone actively ‘promoting’ knitting, photography, mud wrestling, stamp collecting, patio gardening, or model railroads. Sure, they have shows, open to the public events, as does Amateur Radio, not one person out there trying to do it all.

Nope, I think the entire ‘build-up-the-hobby’ thing is just one more way for artie to manipulate the HAMS that hang out on 3.840 with him. Otherwise, he’d put his MONEY where his mouth is, and put the Pahrump Receiver on a server that could handle a huge amount of traffic, and just PAY for the bandwidth, which is something that might ACTUALLY promote the hobby! (Or at least promote the 3.840’s.)

Even giving artie the benefit of the doubt, he obviously did NOT think this one through, and I think he may be driving more people away, than attracting them.

As for me, I’m going to be listening to Gorge Noory tonight also. So I guess one thing artie will be accomplishing is to ‘up’ the ratings of C2C.

The Male Morons!

The full moon and an excess of testosterone again combined to give us a peek into the ‘real men’ that populate 3.840, and made full-blown fools of all of them in the process! Yet most of these jerks are quick to be the ‘first to throw stones’ at anyone else. Hypocrites all! Last night’s scores:

-8 to Greg Sousa w6ezv for the out and out, repeated, threats against Steve Wingate. “I’m gonna bring three gallons of gasoline, sprinkle it around your house and light a match.” This actually escalated to Greg Sousa REQUESTING that anyone who was within close driving distance to Steve’s home should to go “take care of the problem.” These threats made my hair stand on end; there are people out there just crazy enough to do as requested! His wife should cut him off for a month if not more!

-6 to Steve Wingate k6thx for the foul language. I had nothing against the content of his meanderings, but the EXCESSIVE foul language, provoked or not, is way above and beyond, even for THESE liberal ears. I think George Carlin could add a few new invectives to HIS list from Steve’s profane vocabulary. This score would have been worse, except that Steve seemed to sober up a little as the night went on. Steve should have to go to an AA meeting every day for a month!

-5 to Art Bell w6obb who at the beginning actually instigated the confrontation. THEN when the going got rough, artie got going! He NEVER said another word, meaning he never tried to ‘calm’ anyone down. The old 'hit & run' technique my older sister mastered so well as a chld, as MOST kids do, artie uses repeatedly, with aplomb! The ‘master of manipulation’ had done it again, hit & run. artie should have to come live with ME for a month! I cured my sister, I could also cure him of this extremely nasty habit.

-5 to Art Bell who PRACTICED the supreme form of control, as I absolutely KNEW he would sooner or later, and it happened to be sooner, by NOT replaying last night’s recordings TODAY. (So what GOOD is the highly [self] touted Pahrump Receiver? Many complain they can’t get in (I must admit I haven’t had that problem). You have to ‘ping’ it every hour to keep it going, so you can't record, and it’s going to be edited by artie whenever he chooses. The Lord of the Loop speaks again!)

-4 To Jim Watson ki6gu for taking a picture from the http://www.3840HamFans@yahoogroups/ list, where he’s been a non-participant on ‘no-mail’ status, by choice, for months. The picture in question was part of a set awaiting uploading to the 3840HamFans picture album. He posted this pic on HamCams, simply to please artie and curry his favor! Though he DID credit HamFans for the pic, he certainly KNOWS how to reach me on Messenger and via email! Jim has been asked repeatedly to NOT infringe on copywrited list materials by posting them without permission. Obviously, it’s more important to Jim to please artie then abide by federal copywrite laws. Jim should have to read the entire American copywrite law! (btw Jim, it's easily found on the net.)

-3 to all the OTHER, minor, participants of this debacle. Why did they not just go elsewhere? Or ignore Steve??? No, they choose to participate in their own small (and I do mean small) ways. In the end, they all contributed to what must be one of the lowest moments in HAM radio, OR helped to put on a good 'show', depending on how you want to look at it. This segment of 'the group' should all have to stay totally SILENT, no matter what the conversation; no, not one word to anyone, other than to ID as legally required, for two consecutive nights on 3.840.

I can’t help but wonder what these ‘macho’ men would think if they KNEW recordings of this ego driven, male moron, mob mentality, psychologically sick, drivel, had been sent to their mothers, wives, significant others, sisters, nieces? Or if they opened their morning papers to see it PRINTED in entirety, on the front page for all to read???

Jim Southwick's - n7js Online Tuner

Jim Southwick n7js, wrote on August 15, 2005 (today!) on the s-meter forum:

"I feel I can start to be freed up to get mine back to its original intent. A receiver for various facets of radio (i.e. sstv, shortwave broadcasts, air traffic, AM DX, etc. and OF COURSE ham radio) rather than a receiver for listening continually to a few personalities. "

I absolutely back him 100% on this! I know first hand how frustrated he's been over the last couple of years having his 'tuner' literally hi-jacked by all us SWL'S!!! It's his site, he should be able to do what he wants with it, but he didn’t, bowing instead to the wants & needs of the SWL’s!

Jim has given countless hours of pleasure to the SWL side of the Amateur Radio hobby, especially those of us without radios, or not in a good location for listening on our radios.

I know he realizes this 'logically', but I still don't think Jim understands the emotional impact of that ‘voice in the night’ to those of us who just can’t go get on air, to the insomniacs, aged, ill, or just plain lonely!

Yes, the 3.840’s are frequently a SOAP OPERA of sorts, but compared hour by hour, that usually is NOT the case. I have no doubt, as many of the HAMS have said repeatedly; SWL’S often turn into HAMS.

I can’t foresee that happening to moi! Plus, there is NOTHING WRONG with being a SWL, of claiming it as a hobby (I do!). It’s as much a part of Amateur Radio as are the on air personalities.

When 3.840 turns into Days of Our Lives, many of us, HAMS & SWL alike, enjoy the hell out of it while it lasts! We gossip, twitter, email, record, and meet in chats. BUT, we also listen when there is no controversy, or when Art Bell isn’t on. What does that say???

Now Jim’s n7js site is going to get technical. And I’ll probably never go there, as I’m not a HAM, nor am I a technical person. I am a SWL, the other side of the coin.

I also wanted to point out that there is a real ‘audience’ for dedicated online tuners. I used to listen to local police/fire online YEARS AGO, before it became illegal, on a dedicated internet tuner in my city. It’s too bad that there aren’t more of them. Perhaps they fulfill a service just as needed as Amateur Radio.

Perhaps after Jim is ‘done’ restructuring his site, he’ll consider doing a site for SWL’s, a place where we can ask all the stupid questions we want, get the info we need, all without being laughed off the net???

I want to thank Jim Southwick n7so, for his service to the SWL community. And to wish him the best of luck with whatever his new site turns out to be, and most of all, I want him to have FUN with his site!

evvy, an Art Bell Fan???

Recently, a reader of this blog posted:

>>>evvy, you must have been a big art bell fan at one time, after all you started this group,

I have listened to Art Bell most nights for many years. Since long before C2C. Since back when he was a night-time talk show host, out of Las Vegas.

It was at that time when (as an avid talk show listener), I became aware of his on air talent, and his legitimate care of his listeners/callers! (I Am not sure that applies any longer.).

I believe that during those years, his real talent was easily apparent. It was a time when he knew many of the folks who called in by their first names, especially the truckers (who depended on Art Bell on those lonely long-hauls through the desert night).

He was lucky to have one guest a week! The rest of the time it was up to his inherent talent and devices to fill the air, to get people to call in. And when there were no callers, he talked about any and everything, including HAM radio. Then there were the games: Truth & Lie, etc. This was a far different program than C2C.

Am I an Art Bell Fan? No, I don't think so, at least not in the usual connotation. I admire much about him, his broadcast and talent, his (except for moi!) tendency to have an open mind, his knowledge of a wide variety of subjects, and his obviously good business decisions.

But he is human, just like the rest of us, and I think his 'celebrity' status has gone to his head, and that's because he has allowed it too. (This is NOT to say thdoesn't doesn't have to protect himself & his family from the NUTS.)

I think he's made few major errors, in his broadcast career. One was totally 'losing' the 'old' Art Bell show. And the second was allowing himself to be influenced (mirrored, if you will) by those that ARE only Fans in the guise of Friends. So now he only sees himself by what they reflect for him and that's not likely to be reality.

Art Bell and I also have a lot in common! (Though HE doesn't want to hear about it!).

-We are the same age.
-I am also a talented person with Fans (though not many, poets donÂ’t have MANY fans, but I do have a following.)
-I understand performing and the exhaustion that follows. (BTDT)
-I would be a Libertarian if they could ever come up w/a winner.
-We have many of the same political/social views.
-We are both PUBLISHED writers.
-I am also a smoker.
-I love the desert, would live there if I could.
-Though IÂ’m not science oriented at ALL, I have a love of weather.
-I love cats, have two.
-I am a night person.
-I too, can talk to almost anyone about almost anything.

The reader went on:

>>>most people who listen to 3.840 and post in these groups i would say are art bell fans. That's why they listen not to hear the others but to hear art.

I can't speak for others, but I admit, I found the online tuners, via an Art Bell mirc group. I was very ill at the time, and missing his voice at night. So I went searching for audio clips, old shows, etc.

That said, I am a life-long radio listener! I was enthralled with radio ever since I can remember! Sitting in the front room while my Gramps peeled potatoes for dinner we listened to programs like the Lone Ranger, Amos & Andy, and Our Miss Brooks emanating from a big, brown floor model, radio in 1948. And a couple of years later, when I was allowed to stay up longer, The Shadow Knows, and other riveting mysteries.

In recent years, it's been PBS, and an alternative station (Palm Springs?) that produces original dramas once a week, and all the usual talk shows. But the buy out by Clear Channel has ended much of that. I am turning more and more to television, CNN and Fox news programming.

Once I DID find the online tuners, Amateur Radio, and SWL. I was hooked! And not just because of Art Bell! That was icing on the cake! I love Tim's Travels (especially when he had better audio) and other mobile HAMS, The Burbank Boys entertain me to no end! Timmy's jamming and singing I enjoy for short periods. Big Ben is always there with a soft voice and attitude. And lately, Melba Mac and his cows...

Who could resist a cast of 'characters' like that??? Putting their lives on air, foibles and all??? Not a radio lover! In fact, perhaps Art Bell syndicated the wrong show!

No, I would listen even if Art Bell were not there. In fact, I often listen early in the evening when he isn't on air. Some of the best 3.840 listening was on week-ends while Art did C2C and the band had just a few 'regulars', often having sane conversations.

The reader continued:

>>>so really are you that much different than Trish in that regard?

Yes, I am. I did not pursue Amateur Radio, get a license, rig, and string wire because I'm an Art Bell Fan. Nor did I ever fly to Pahrump to meet him. (He's welcome to stop by this 'smoking' apartment for coffee whenever he's in the San Diego Area.) Nor did I get a HAM call sign that emulates his. (btw, I really don't think there's anything wrong with any of that, as long as Art Bell doesn't feel imposed upon. But it IS funny!) So, I am not a 'fan' of Art Bell in the original sense of the word, 'fanatic', as the case may be with Trish.

The reason the list was originally started had absolutely nothing to do with Art Bell. It was as an alternative for the heavy handiness of Midnight Hams, which I belonged to till they booted me, which was awhile AFTER I'd started the 3.840 list. And because there were a few HAMS & SWL'S, who seemed to think that all this was as funny as I did! (Now there are a lot more!)

The question is, how can these 3.840 HAMS have such thin-skin when they get on public air and say what they say, and do what they do??? No one is forcing them. In essence, they are performing for the public, by choice.

So how can those HAM performers expect for views different from theirs not be 'aired' albeit in a different format? Surely, Art Bell, and all the HAMS, if they think it through, have to expect comments on their performances. How could they be surprised when folks point out all the gaffes, and personal quirks, of this very elite, mostly white male, affluent, and eclectic group?

Hey, I'm just the 'commentator' that rose to the top of the heap, perhaps because I'm a writer to begin with. Too bad artie doesn't have a sense of humor or he might be laughing too!

Melba Mac can sure Backpedal!

I was not surprised, but I was disappointed, to hear Melba Mac w7lw, night before last, backpedal on prior statements on air regarding the 'bird humor' with Bill the Troll n6ayj.

I was suprised because I wasn't sure just how much of a 'loop worshiper' Melba Mac was; now we know!

He was not 'groveling', exactly, but he did want to make sure artie w6obb, 'knew the whole story'. He even reposted the picture of the 'bird' on HamCams for a few minutes again, so artie could view it first hand.

Jeeze, the whole story, such as it is, can be heard on the audio clip!

With his usual 'could care less' attitude (understandable in this instance), artie just said something about people 'twisting' the facts. How can one 'twist' an audio clip (well, sans editing, of course)???

Unfortuntately, I was not recording - too much static! But the original, unedited, audio clip remains on the site.

These 'loop worshipers' are really something else! Wish I could understand the mentallity.

Grain of Truth???

I'd seen the picture first, while wandering around HamCams for a few minutes to see if anything NEW has been posted, and wondered about it myself.

Then later that same evening, I just happened to be listening when Billie the Troll - n6ayj, asked Melba Mac - w7lw, about the significance of the baby bird picture Mac had posted to Hamcams. ("Birds of a feather", these two HAMS are not! For one thing, Melba Mac w7lw, is a human being.)

The resulting conversation (tit for tat!) was great, I laughed all the way through it. I have no doubts that this specific clip will become a classic...

BUT, is there perhaps a small grain of truth in Melba Mac's w7lw on air (and on HamCams) 'humor' about baby birds, about the HAMS of 3.840, about how the HAMS cater to artie w6obb??? Of course there was!

Was Melba Mac saying with 'humor' what he was, in actuality, feeling??? Or had observed???

Listen to it yourself and make up your own mind.

Imitation and Flattery

That old axiom may be true. And I certainly think that Trish Ray, k4obb is trying to 'copy' 3840HamFans, but I am not flattered!

For one thing, why does she have to 'depend' on everyone else for ideas: her call, her web site (NOT k4obb - which is a spoof hosted by 3840HamFans), even her antenna? Can she not come up with some original ideas of her own???

If not, then I sure wish Trish k4obb would learn how to build a decent looking web site!

Her site is such a conglomeration of redundant stuff, including programs she wants you to download in order to see/hear things, that it's a real pain. Then there's the mis-mash of colors, styles, fonts, outdated graphics and bad placement, that it's almost embarrassing to view.

If I were any of the 3840 Hams, I don't think I'd be promoting this disaster of a site!

New Blog Format!

Ye old blog template got corrupted. It was getting VERY difficult to post new messages, became a real hassle!

Since it was more difficult to 'repair' the old template than it was to switch to a new one, I switched!

I don't think we lost any features, but if we did, or if you find any 'glitches', please let me know at Hamfans@cox.net

Thanks!

The Day After Tomorrow

From this week's TV Guide (Cox Edition 7/17 - 7/23/05):

Global warming triggers an ice age in this disaster flick staring Dennis Quaid. Spectacular effects prop up a cheesy script.

Uhhh, did artie write that 'cheesy' script???

ki4dvf to k4obb to k4ze

Trish is changing her vanity call once more, this time to k4ze. And, it would seem, she has already purchased k4ze.com, or so she told Big Ben. Indeed, if you click on www.k4ze.com you currently end up at www.HamCams.com

Now you might wonder why this .com thing is so important to Trish, as she now has
www. patriciaray.net, a perfectly acceptable site where she can post her ‘odes’ and ‘cow’ items. (However, she must be feeling ‘one step behind’ as someone even beat her to the punch with patriciaray.com, but it’s for sale at $495. Jeeze, bet the owner of k4oob.com would sell it to her for less than the owner of patriciaray.com is asking!)

Trish must still own ki4dvf, that web site now whisks you away to arties audio stream on s-meter. Wouldn’t you think she’d direct it towards HER own site? And what about all the music that was on that site, where is it now? (Trish has learned to ‘point’!)

But I digress. It seems that Trish also told Big Ben that she HAS to change her vanity call again because she wasn’t able to obtain k4obb.com. Right. Why don’t ya just tell ‘em Trish, that changing your mind IS a woman’s prerogative and let it go at that. It might even go over better.

Trish also stated on air, again to Big Ben, that w6obb.com was available. I think not…

Clarity, artie, clarity!

While I'm extremely grateful for the Sangean ATS 505 that Robolon, ke7bbx, sent me, over two years ago, and STILL use it at times when conditions are favorable (it doesn't filter noise at all, which is why Sangean quit making it). I also reported on the 'Robo Loop' functions, as requested, for several months after I received it. (Still would if Robolon wanted...)

It was NOT a Sangean 909 as ARTIE keeps insisting, (go listen to the clip!) and Robo doesn't seem inclined to correct artie, probably because it isn't important to him. TWO local HAMS have seen the radio & can attest that it is a Sangean ATS 505. Wonder if artie would like a notarized affidavit from them? Though it was such a wonderful gift, from a very gracious Robolon, I never would have accepted it had I known that artie was going to hold it over my head for years!!!
Why doesn't artie start sending out radios to folks that need them? Then he WOULD have something to talk about
!

Trish k4obb, has learned how to SUCK UP big time!

Well, I can't believe it, and YOU won't either!!!

It took till now for me to get off the floor where I was laughing hysterically, to get to the keyboard to write this GRUDGE.

Although it's composition is not credited to anyone; 'name of author withheld by request', since it IS on Trish's, k4obb, page, I have to assume that SHE is the author...

I won't EVEN go into the poetics of the 'poem' other than to give the definition of "ODE: A lyric poem of some length, usually of a serious or meditative nature and having an elevated style and formal stanzaic structure." This info is EASILY available, you'd have thought she'd have at least checked this out first. Sigh. An 'ode' this tripe is not...

Now I can understand anyone getting fully involved in their hobby, especially if they are new to it. I can even understand looking up to others in the hobby; those that have helped them, gotten them involved, etc. "Ode to w6obb's receiver" goes far beyond.

Surely does look like Trish, k4obb, has completed the initiation rights required to join the 'cult of the loop'. She's obviously not only learned CW, but the needed 'suck up to artie' talents...

Heaven help us, I can only hope she doesn't really believe all that crap!!!

Go read "Ode to w6obb's receiver", then post a comment to this article!
(btw, and check out k4obb too!)

Art Bell w6obb: a sad excuse of a man!

A few days after artie's tuner went on line, I emailed him with a few comments, complimentary and informative all. Probably not more that four sentences.

The next day I received a curt and unexpected reply: "I have read what you have written about me, please do not attempt any further communication."

And I didn't, haven't, and I won't unless artie initiates such.

His loss, not mine! I can remember his 'early' shows! I remember the night he turned 50! Most importantly, I KNOW what his next two books should be...

That email is STILL sitting in my INBOX. I wanted to be reminded, often, just what a sad excuse of a man he's become.

The thing is, I have never written anything about Art Bell - w6obb, that wasn't 'reporting' and the truth! I stayed away from personal opinion. (Till right now!) I've mimicked him, taunted him, made fun of some situations he's been in, etc. Can I help it if the man is without humor??? (What's that say about a person?)

I have frequently given artie the benefit of the doubt in situation after situation. Guess he never noticed that!

There have even been a few times when I've said some nice things about him! Guess he never noticed THAT either!

I've actually admitted to many, that I think he is a great 'showman' and broadcaster! That he has 'show business' smarts regarding his career. And so on... Guess he never noticed THAT either!

I've sided with him in many issues. He must not have noticed THAT either.

There are a lot of things he doesn't seem to notice. Like when Jim Southwick n7js provided artie with extensive info on how to set up a streaming tuner. Several days after art's tuner was up and working, there was a long on-air conversation between artie and Jim. I never, ever heard artie say 'thank you' or even anything close! In fact, the conversation was 'stilted' and artie was just short of rude to Jim. Jim Southwick is one of the good guys and did not deserve to be treated like that.

I can't remember artie EVER thanking or apologizing to anyone for anything. This kind of behavior probably evolved when artie decided he was a 'celebrity'. And it is not helped by all the folks around him that let him get away with acting in such a manner(or unmannerly, I should say). They aren't doing him any favors...

Doesn't artie know that many of the things I say out loud and to his face, his 'best HAM buddies' are saying behind his back??? And laughing about it??? How does he think I know, or find out much of this stuff. I never thought he was stupid, as he apparently thinks I am!

So, I guess the thing is: if you are not one of artie's worshipers, or flunkies, or if he doesn't 'need' you for something that will later turn out to be HIS idea, then you're just a piece of flotsom floating down the imaginary river of Art Bell's imaginary life. What a sad and fragile existence!

k4obb

Trish - k4obb, says in her audio clip on her web site, that k4obb was her second choice for a vanity call. But her first choice, isn't even available till July 2005.

So, in essence, her choice for a vanity call WAS k4obb!

I've gotta say, I do not understand this. Why would she want to copy, emulate, flatter, Art Bell? Or embarrass him, step on his toes? Whichever the case may be.

Whatever her reasons, I haven't stopped laughing since I heard this news. (I needed a good laugh!)

Big Ben - kd7bcw, said on air last night 'what a hoot' when talking about her new call. Art - w6obb replied, 'if that's what you want to call it'. (I think I'd call it obsessive.)

Tonight, Melba Mac - w7lw, said he was disappointed. He thought Trish should have applied for the vanity, k4lw!

Too bad calls like k4nutso aren't assigned. Amateur Radio would be so much more fun...

On the other hand, this might just be a trend starting. What if all the 'followers of the loop' got similar vanity calls? If all their calls ended in obb??? Now THAT would be a hoot!

Hacker is at it again!

FOUR times this evening, someone tried to get my 'account' information from Blogger.com !

I know because I got FOUR email notices from Blogger, in a period of about an hour. I just changed all my info, several times!

Now, WHO or WHY would someone do this??? And to what purpose?

This is REALLY a stupid person (see prior comments on stupid people), as this is an 'open' blog and anyone can post a comment anytime they want.

If the object was to 'delete' my account, I'd just have Blogger reinstate it. And back ups are stored in several DIFFERENT areas, on two DIFFERENT servers.

Yea, HAMS are a really great group of folks, and I'd want to be one. NOT!!!

The SD Padres and Art Bell!

This afternoon, while watching the Padres lose (again!), to the Diamondbacks, an interesting thing happened.

Sometime after the 7th inning stretch, with the Padres several runs behind, I got busy doing something else in another room, but was listening.

Mark Grant and another announcer were talking about a statue, or piece of art, that is apparently located outside the Diamondbacks stadium. One said that he fully expected an 'alien' to exit the 'ufo' every time he saw it.

Mark Grant said it was large enough to be 'the mother ship'.

Then Mark Grant said, "Someone ought to call Art Bell, so he can tell us what it is."

Now this was a local broadcast, and I don't know who else might have been broadcasting this one game, but that's pretty good coverage for 'free' advertising! Or would that be considered a 'product endorsement'?

At any rate, there was nothing derogatory about the conversation, in fact, the entire conversation as well as their tone of voice, would suggest the opposite.

I found it funny though, because I know how much Art dislikes baseball (I sure don't understand that! But then I HATE football...)

I don't have Art's phone number or I would have given him a ring. And he probably has my email blocked, and ditto MSN Messenger. But I'm sure that someone from San Diego (there are any number of HAMS here), gave him a heads up. If not, artie, you really ought to 'reconnect' me, sometimes I actually have info you may be interested in!!!

HamCams - Again

hmmm - isn't it interesting that www.hamcams.com has not posted any hit numbers since it was pointed out that their #s are going down???

The hit counter consistently presents as a 'red X'. And has for weeks now!

No wonder their numbers aren't maintaining at a high rate, currently, there are a few active 'posters', and the rest just don't bother. Some of the pics there now, are OVER a month old. It's easy to tell which ones, they are dated!

Come on HamCams! REMOVE anything over a week old! It will not only save loading time, but may 'inspire' some of those HAM laggards into action...

Still one more Worshiper at the Temple of the Loop?

Trish - ki4dvf was on 3840 last night: with Big Ben - kd7bcw and artie - w60bb, for the first time ever!!! I just heard about this from someone else tonight.

I'm thrilled Trish got her Extra license; I know for a fact that she's been working hard for a long time to achieve this goal.

But am wondering WHY she didn't tell her cyber-friends? Why she didn't send out an email or drop into messenger to let us know she'd taken the test and passed? That she was gonna do her first transmit, get on air last night???

Also, apparently she's 'upgraded' her equipment considerably from just a couple of weeks ago; she has a 1600 loop!!! And has gotten an amp!!! And she never told us!

Is she a hot shot HAM now? Too good for the rest of us? (The 'us' she was a big part of for years!)

Hmmm. Has Trish crossed that line (it's looking that way!). Is she back on the bcw list? I know she's 'back' in with Big Ben, she's said as much. Her first HamCams pic was posted by Big Ben just recently. So Trish made 'the right side' of artie there; must have pleased her greatly. (Hmm, she didn't tell us about that either.)

Which means, she's not far from cozying up to artie. (Which may have been her goal since the beginning, consciously or sub-consciously - remember the trip to Pahrump???) Probably not far from being invited back to the Mental Hens.

It's amazing to me how quickly some people forget being stabbed in the back! How soon they return for more. And how many of 'em do this just to be able to 'rub shoulders' with a celebrity??? How very sad!

And if so, what must artie think of such people??? I would hope he'd take pity on those with such 'empty' lives. Or does he suck it up like a kid does cotton candy; enjoying every bite of it, and looking for more?

And, no, I am not jealous of Trish; her license, her loop, her amp. I am disappointed that she's turned out to be just one more 'fair-weather' friend. I think I've run into this MORE in HAM radio circles than I have anywhere else, at least the 3840 circle. (And, over the years, I've also made some very good friends; that I am loyal to, and are loyal to me.)

BUT, I'm getting tired of encouraging these folks; spending HOURS on messenger or on the phone, listening to their hysterics, soothing their hurt feelings. Or just being there as they rant over perceived wrongs. Of supporting them in their endeavors, only to get the cold shoulder when they achieve their own goals.

I didn't record last night, so I don't have a copy of it for 'history'. And actually, perhaps that's better; I'm funny that way, I REMEMBER how people have treated ME...

JimandLeahs Online Tuner

If you've had trouble getting into the tuner lately, http://weatherstation.tripod.com/active.html you are not the only one. Sometimes you get a message the the tuner is 'unavailable' or the more standard "no connections available'. So you settle for 'audio only, and you find it's tuned to some religious AM station

Jim Southwick n7js, reports that apparently a hacker has figured out a way to freeze and lock the tuner. He is trying to work on the issue but the 'hackers' are persistent. They have also gone after other free tuner sites. Just read www.smeter.net So if anyone should happen to have any info regarding this; please let Jim know...

On a brighter note; Jim has installed a SECOND chat room, with ALL the bells and whistles, so if you don't get into the tuner, (or even if ya do!), or if you are listening to your own receiver, you can still converse with everyone in the tuner as well as those locked out.

I've spent some time in the second chat, and I'm happy to report that a lot of the old 'regulars' are starting to show up. Do check it out!!! A hint though, sign in with the nick or call that folks recognize!

And the best Director goes to...

The performers and the directors (and don't doubt for a second that it was both DIRECTED and a performed by many!) last night on 3.840 should get some kind of award. Like a burning brown bag on their doorsteps?

Now I'm not the brightest 'bulb' on the block (or after listening to these folks, perhaps I am!) but did NO ONE else notice the serendipitous timing of these recent events---

Monday night, artie - w60bb was distributing, via email, to some of his minions, x-cording; an easy and simple program any dummy could use to record mp3 files, like the antics on 3.840. (He also gave out instructions on how to install the program.)

Tuesday night, very early in the evening; artie - w60bb informed one and all (Big Ben - kd7bcw, Melba Mac - w7lw, and any other of the early bird HAMS), that the FCC would be monitoring the 3.840 frequency on this very evening. You could almost see the bobbing heads moving in astute agreement.

Then as the evening wore on with mind numbing boring conversation, artie, big ben, melba mac, and others gradually and quietly left the 3.840 frequency. Did they go elsewhere or were they monitoring???

Lo and behold billy the bill collector - n6ayj, was left all alone. Well, he might as well have been alone, he was trying to bloviate (and despite being a lawyer, he is NOT a bloviater!) TO timmie the tactless - n6mza.

Both of these HAMS were claiming OUTLAW status from the 3840 HAMS group. Claiming a kinship of sorts, they were encouraging, wheedling, enticing, and inviting SteveO - kg6txh to join them on air. And their prey took the bait.

Slowly, one by one, a few of the other regulars joined in: GU ki5gu, Greg the voice of unreason - w6ezv, Robolon - ke7bbx, and National City Bill - wb6bnq.

As SteveO became more & more intoxicated with whatever his favorite substance is, his rantings became more intense, repetitive, and non-sensical. It was painful to listen too actually, and sad. (And SteveO, you really should buff up that profanity vocabulary...there really are more than Carlin's 7 words.)

While a couple of the HAMS actually tried in subtle, half-hearted, ways to 'disarm' the situation, it was much too late for that. The 'plan' was in full swing, the recorders were recording away, as SteveO lost any control he may have thought he had, of himself and/or others. With the help, of course, of many of the participants, who fanned the fires with glee.

It was still going full-tilt, when I opted for bed. One has to wonder if these folks other favorite pastimes are watching S/M videos or going out on the south forty and shooting the livestock in the legs while gathering up the stuff for the brown bags...

HamCams: A Flash in the pan???

Like everyone else, I enjoy HamCams. HamCams was started by Paul Bowman - w7mag, of Pahrump, Nevada (Probably at the behest of his good buddy and neighbor, artie - w6obb.)

It was a great idea, and still is. But I don't check the site as often as I used too. Other people report spending less time there also. Though I remember well it's first weeks when HamCams would rack up a jillion hits per night.

For one thing, it's almost impossible for those using dial-up to load the over bloated page anymore. And although I believe every HAM that wants one, should have a spot (as long as it is 'family oriented'); it's just gotten too large. Perhaps it's time to:

- Segment/Divide the page in some sort of logical way i.e. by license class, or by alphabet, or by ??? So that when you open HamCams, you'd get a 'link' list and go one level 'deeper' to get to the smaller, more manageable, pic pages.

But worse than the size/loading problem; it has become BORING!!! There are MANY pics there that haven't been changed in forever! Whatever happened to HamCams policy of DELETING pics that were over a couple of weeks old???

Yet the ONE reason I always went to HamCams is gone; the live webcam of the NYC street!

I KNOW HamCams is a totally volunteer site, and that Paul Bowman does the all the work, administration, etc. himself. (AND I personally know how THAT goes!!!). But perhaps it's time for Paul to 'appoint' some additional volunteers??? People who have the time and energy to monitor the site???

To top it all off, many sites link to HamCams (ahem, including
www.3840HamFans.com ), but HamCams apparently doesn't believe in reciprocating as the only link to another site is to JimandLeahs Online Tuner (of course, Jim Southwick - n7js is also a ham)!!! But then what about Radio Bothell Online by Kent Nyberg - wm70? His online tuner page is shaping up very nicely indeed!)

With these 'lacks', one wonders how long it will be before HamCams itself will last??? Or perhaps the page will be up, and just fewer and fewer folks will visit it; after all how many times do you want to view the same old mug shots??? Otherwise HamCams may be on it's way out. Just another of arties 'flashes in the pan'.

Congrats, Trish!

Last weekend, Trish - ki4dvf passed her 'General' test!!!! Trish is a long-time friend of mine, and I'm just tickled 'pink' at her success!

Now she's studying for her Extra, which she expects to take (and pass) soon. In her spare time, she's working on her Antenna and Rig!

Won't be long before she's on air with the BIG BOYS. And I can't wait! A woman HAM. A REAL woman who has a husband, cooks dinner, and visits her mother, is gonna be on air!!!

Take my word for it, Trish is gonna be able to fry the bacon with one hand, and tune with the other, AND she has the room for a giant loop, if she wants one!

I personally KNOW that she's been working hard on this every step of the way. (And I've tried my best to encourage her.) She became seriously interested on getting on air about a year ago AFTER her fateful (and painful) trip to Pahrump! (Just as I decided, as a SWL, to add a woman's 'two cents' to the 'group' via the net!).

Then (like myself), the Hens and the BCW list banned her (Stupid people! Wonder if they're gonna want her BACK now???). All this (after the pain of it), just fueled her DETERMINATION, and look where she IS now!!!

Hopefully, soon, we'll be hearing a feminine voice among the masculine. And a woman's point of view on all the issues. And a woman's hand to 'rock the cradle' of all those 'baby' male egos currently on air! And finally, some estrogen to freshen the 'locker room' air!

Move over guys! Make room for the women!!! We gotcha covered!

Trish! I'm so very proud of ya!!!

Mac - w7lw - a rival?

Heard one night this last week on air.

Mac - w7lw says: (paraphrased) that he has an itch to build a bigger and better antenna than Art Bell-w60bb has.

Mac has purchased 5 acres of property in southern Idaho, kinda like Art did in Nevada. He has purchased pre-fab housing (which is being installed now), kinda like Art did. In fact, Art has been advising Mac on much of this.

Now Mac wants an antenna like Art's, only bigger and better.

Not that there's anything wrong with any of that! No indeedy, I kinda envy both of 'em, at least as far as owning property and homes go.

The thing of interest here: What if Mac-w6lw, succeeds???? Will Art then buy the county of Nye so he can build a REALLY BIG LOOP???

Stay tuned folks! The antenna 'wars' may have just heated up!!!
