Whats with the Online Tuners (or Art Bell as censor)?

Between uploads of data to a friend’s server, (I’m backing up data in preparation of changing computers.) I did listen for about an hour to the Pahrump receiver: http://www.smeter.net/pahrump/audio.php. Got right in, in fact! And the reason why was because it was a rerun!!!!

It took a few minutes for me to realize that I’d heard this before. It was a recording of a transmission that I had heard shortly after Katrina struck (of which they spoke). It sounded familiar, but it wasn’t until I heard Joanne w6mku come on to defend FEMA, that I realized I was listening to a ‘rerun’. I did check the s-meter page, and there were no notes there about a 'replay'. So any folks listening out there, thought they were hearing 'live' SW!

Then I went to Radio Bothell Online, my own fav online tuner, as Kent Nyberg wm70 REALLY operates a full featured online tuner at: http://home.comcast.net/~ka7znm/stream.html, (Though the audio could be better!) At Radio Bothell, on 3.840 there was just 'static'. I used the 'presets' and checked a few other frequencies, and never did hear a ‘voice’. I did not, however, have the mental acuity to check an AM station, to see if the tuner was working. I just assumed the tuner was down, or that no one was on air.

I quickly whipped by Jim Southwick n7js’s, recently back online tuner at: http://www.jimandleah.com/, and that tuner does not seem to be online any longer, other than streaming through s-meter. Unfortunately I don’t know if Jim was also streaming the ‘replay’. I didn’t think to check and actually, didn’t have the time as I needed to get back to uploading data.

I sure hope JimandLeah and Radio Bothell get any tech probs they may be having ironed out soon as there are many, many HAMS and SWL’s out there seeking that ‘voice in the night’.

And it would seem that artie w60bb is unable to provide that service for them without falling into the temptation of ‘manipulating’ these listeners by choosing, all by himself, what they should (and conversely, should NOT) hear!

Now I admit there is probably MUCH material heard at night that probably SHOULD NOT be replayed the next day. And I admit that it IS Art Bell's receiver. But Art Bell w60bb as ‘supreme’ censor of 3.840??? It seems to be turning out that way. Manipulation of the media, any media, especially without any type of 'notice', is the ultimate in control…

No re-runs on my site - just live audio. I imagine that is a service from Art for people who pull a "day shift" here in the USA to listen to 3840 happenings. Not sure why there would be anything older than a day however. Can't imagine anyone would want to hear a re-run of anything on shortwave. The magic is in the live aspect of the radio wave (even on a computer w/ a few sec delay). Maybe that is just me though?? You can actually pose those questions at Smeter.net in the forums there. The Pahrump receiver has its own forum.
My site should be good to go and has been for some time....but it is different now. The difference being you must be able to see the active/x window now (there is no longer a Java panel), you must enter the IP in the Station Box, and you must request the password (and enter it).
This is sort of a trial basis to see how many people have problems with this. Both the extra steps and active/x issues. SO if I get many reports like yours Evvy (and I've had some) we may go back to the old time tested way it was before even with all the different problems and warts not so much related to the tuner, and stop trying to re-invent the wheel. Sometimes I have nightmares at night and voices scream at me "Don't fight it Jim......you can't win!!" The ghouls may win in the end.

Actually artie has the ability to tune his Pahrump receiver at will. You can hear him do it almost any night.

And a 'good' service it is. Except that he plays 'censor' with the daytime reruns also.

Perhaps just MORE explanation is needed on the page? I finally figured out how to 'do' it, and got audio. BUT, I didn't know WHAT audio. Are u streaming only 3840? How do u know where tuner is set, and how do u change it? And WHO can change it?

Although the audio is good, I don't see that it's an advantage over the Java unless some of these issues can be addressed.

Is it an ONLINE TUNER, if you can't tune it? And how to get a consensus from listeners on where to tune?

Just some 'not enuf coffee yet' thoughts, Jim...

Boo, hoo hoo! Boo, hoo hoo! That mean old Art Bell put up a receiver that we can use for free, but he doesn't operate it the way I want him to, so I'm going to piss and moan endlessly about it! Why the hell won't that nasty Art Bell listen to my instructions?

hmmm, sounds like artie to me! Only artie would be so self-absorbed to ONLY focus on the comments about HIS receiver. Ya think?

Come on artie, you don't have to hide behind an anon; we all know it's you...
