A Rose by any Other Name

Except we are not talking sweet smelling blossoms here; we’re talking thorns! Imagine my glee when I noticed that one of the thorniest Ham/SWL groups around, the Midnight Hams have renamed themselves to ‘Ham Friends-Amateur Radio Community’.

Friends? To whom? Only themselves no doubt, as they as exclusive and reclusive as Ben’s BCW List. Obviously they still feel that they must keep out the people who have minds of their own! And by congregating in one spot like they do, the Thorny Hens unwittingly protect the rest of us from THEM.

Community? How can you be an ‘Amateur Radio Community if you do not accept new members? I did go to their site; it was the same old story, ‘only a moderator can set up new accounts’.

So why bother with the name change? As usual, my guess would be to prop up their self-image of themselves now that they do not have Art Bell w6obb, either on AM, or 3.840 to focus on. (Did it ever occur to them that artie might be back or that there are other reasons to listen to HAM radio at Midnight?) So is that ALL they were about, artie? Of course...

Instead of re-naming themselves though, they should have gotten together with Big Ben kd7bcw, and merged the BCW list and the Midnight Hams. That way they could call themselves something like, The Moral Hams! They could preach to each other, leave the rest of us who do not need ‘leaders’ to our own cogitation and decisions!

And they would have more members. Is having 10 posting members a community?

Evvy, are you still a bit bitter about being booted by the board? (Please excuse the alliteration... I couldn't help myself.)

Believe it or not, it is very unlikely that you would have been booted if you had not gone off half-cocked at the Hens. I was there, and I remember the situation quite clearly. It was a misunderstanding on your part.

I have heard that the Hens are not really so bad, but they just need to get down off their high horse and be more friendly with us 3840 types. I am hoping they are the kind of people who have an open mind, who learn from their mistakes, and that they are willing to ignore the baloney that people like Ben and Orv have told them. If they are reasonably intelligent and unbiased, they will have to admit that Orv has been fundamentally wrong in considering himself and his ilk to be Morally Superior. If the Hens really are willing to be friendly with us 3840 types, we will, of course, be willing to be friendly to them, too.

Actually, Midnight Hams or Ham Friends made a COMPLETE dissassociation from Art Bell years ago. Not only that, but one of the main people who ran the site hasn't been w/ them for years as well. To many, their judgement in hindsight has been viewed quite positively. Other than being selective in who they want as members (which I suppose is their call) - their similarities w/ BCW list escapes me.

Evvy, when you say Art Bell is no longer on AM, do you mean broadcast AM as in the Coast to Coast show or do you simply mean AM modulation on th eham bands?

Jim, I wish the Hens would give us 3840 types a "clean slate" and we would do the same for them. It would require them to admit that us 3840 guys are basically well-intentioned and are working for some necessary ham radio reform. I think I speak for most of the 3840 types when I say that we think the Hens are basically reasonable people who probably have open minds, with whom you can have a civil dialogue. I wish they would admit us to their message board. As for myself, if they would I promise I would try hard to behave myself, and I'm sure the other 3840 types would, too. Would you please ask them? Thanks, Jim.

Yep...

Wow, so Artie is gone from Coast to Coast? Network finally get sick of all his BS?

So what happened to Art Bell on Coast to Coast?
Is he gone permanantly or does Evvy mean he is gone, only for the time being?

I can't find anything on the C2C website or the Art Bell newsgroup about him being gone and not returning.

This weekened I heard the host say he was "sitting in for Art Bell". To me that sounds like the host is saying Art Bell will be back.

Perhaps the reasons Art is gone, and possible not returning to C2C, have not been made public, so could someone tell me what is going on please.

Has he been jailed? Some people feel he killed Ramon to hook up with his current wife and fled the country to avoid being arrested and charged.

Freddie, I lost your email address. Please email me at: bcrowell(at)excite.com, and I will tell you what I know. He did write a FantasticForum entry on July 8, 2006, basically saying that the ISDN line might not solve the problem, and that this may be "the end of the line" for the show, etc., hinting that he may not return to the show at all ("if so, it has been a great ride"). But it is unclear whether, if he doesn't return to C-t-C, it would be by his choice or Premiere Radio's.
